Board of DirectorsOfficersGeorge Kolesar, CSP- General Chairman George has 30 years of industrial safety experience. George is current the Division Safety Manager for Sonoco’s North America Paper Mills. He is a Certified Safety Professional and has a BS Degree in Safety from Indiana University of Pennsylvania. In addition to his current position at Sonoco, he has held safety management positions with Owens Corning, Daimler Chrysler, Goulds Pumps, and Rubbermaid. He is currently a member of ASSE. George resides in Western Pennsylvania with his wife Rhonda and their four children. ![]() DeWayne Bone- 1st Vice Chairman DeWayne is the Director Safety and Health for Greif Inc., and based in Austell GA. DeWayne filled the same position for Caraustar, who was acquired by Greif, since December 2017. Areas of responsibility include supporting 100 plus paper and packing manufacturing facilities in North America and leading a team of professionals providing safety and health leadership and direction to five business lines and land management operations. He is a graduate of East Central University at Ada, Oklahoma with a degree in Industrial Hygiene and Environmental Sciences. DeWayne has over 28 years of experience in the pulp, paper, packaging, plastic, chemical and wood products manufacturing industry and is a registered professional industrial hygienist. DeWayne started his career with Weyerhaeuser in 1991 as a corporate industrial hygienist in Hot Springs, Arkansas and later in Federal Way, Washington while also supporting safety activities and initiatives across all segments of the company. From 2000 through 2006, served in the position of Director/Team Leader, Safety and Health, for Weyerhaeuser’s North American Residential Wood Products division leading over 75 wood products manufacturing sites. From 2006 until the end of 2008, he held the position of Division Safety and Health Manger supporting Weyerhaeuser’s 18 North American Pulp and Paper mills. In 2009, he joined MeadWestvaco (MWV) as the Senior Safety and Health Manager supporting the paper, chemical and plastics divisions. DeWayne left MWV to join RockTenn as the Corporate Manager Safety and Industrial Hygiene in June 2011 located in Atlanta GA and in 2014 became the Director Safety and Health at RockTenn. In 2015, with the merger of RockTenn and MWV into WestRock, his role was expanded to providing companywide strategic safety and industrial hygiene leadership for WestRock’s 46,000 employees and 300+ operating sites around the world. In 2017, DeWayne served as the interim team leader leading over 20 professionals who provided safety and health support to all of WestRock. DeWayne and his wife Tammi, who has worked with Weyerhaeuser over 32 years, is the Manager East Treated Lumber Sales. They have two daughters, Jordan (21) and Jaci (16), and reside in Buford, GA.
Jason is based in Spokane, WA. He is a Certified Safety Professional and a Certified Industrial Hygienist. Jason earned his Bachelor’s degree at the University of Wisconsin-Eau Claire and a Master’s Degree from Purdue University. Prior to joining Clearwater Paper, Jason worked for fourteen years in various EHS positions across the food and beverage industry. He is currently a member of the ASSP and AIHA.
Randy has over 43 years of industrial experience. In addition to his current position, he has held various managerial positions with companies such as Union Carbide (UCAR Carbon), Saturn Manufacturing (SeTech), Phelps Dodge Magnet Wire, Advanced Environmental Recycling Technologies (A.E.R.T.), Baldor Motor Company, Kruger Products and Graphic Packaging International. He is accredited through Volunteer State Community College for his double CSHO Certification for General Industry and Construction & double SSH Certification for General Industry & Construction. Randy holds several trainer certifications such as an OSHA Institute Instructor, SafeStart behavior based program instructor, Outreach Trainer for General Industry & Construction. He has been a certified ISO and Risk Management Auditor and conducts internal and external audits within Kruger Products and other industries preparing for ISO certifications. He also actively participates in the safety training for all new hire classes and current employees. He has served on the board of both the Ozark Safety Council of Northwest Arkansas and Benton County Women’s Shelter.
Directors Paul Bierley, CSP Paul Bierley has been in the safety industry for over 27 years, beginning his career as a Construction Safety Engineer for Willamette Industries Construction. In 1995, Paul became the Safety Coordinator of Willamette’s Johnsonburg, PA, Paper Mill and then worked at that location for Weyerhaeuser and Domtar in roles of increasing responsibility. In January of 2014, Paul took on the role of Sr. Manager, Corporate Health & Safety, for Domtar where he is responsible for a variety of Health & Safety initiatives ranging from auditing, training, and incident analysis, to implementation of best practices and continuous safety improvement efforts. Paul earned a Bachelor of Science Degree in Occupational Health & Safety Management from Slippery Rock University of Pennsylvania and became a Certified Safety Professional (CSP) in 2007. He has experience serving on the local Board of Directors of the American Red Cross and the Elk County Community Foundation where he was the chair of various sub-committees. Paul has been a member of the American Society of Safety Professionals (ASSP) since the early 1990’s and has prior involvement in activities with his local emergency planning commission. In his spare time, Paul enjoys playing golf, fishing, and spending time with his family. He and his wife Patti are the parents of daughters Chloe and Madison.
Risk Management Director, CR Meyer In 2006, Brian started his career at CR Meyer as a site safety coordinator. He advanced to site safety manager and safety director prior to being named risk management director in August of 2017. Brian holds a Master of Science degree in Risk Control from the University of Wisconsin – Stout and Bachelor of Science degree in Health Promotion and Wellness from the University of Wisconsin – Stevens Point. He has been instrumental in major expansion projects and rebuilds in the pulp and paper industry, as well as the mining industry, throughout his career. Brian, his wife, and their two children live in Little Chute, WI, where he is a volunteer fire fighter for the Little Chute Fire Department.
Allan Cairo is currently the Strategic Account Specialist, VP for Rite Hite Inc. with a focus on the Pulp, Paper & Packaging industry. Allan began his career with Rite Hite back in 2012 as a National Account Manager. Prior to joining Rite Hite, Allan worked directly within the Print & Packaging Industry for over 25 years, which has allowed him to develop and maintain a thorough understanding of the market as well as strategic safety initiatives of those working within it.
Steve has been in the paper industry for 22 years, 12 years as production supervisor 8 years as the mill safety director at the Hartford City Paper mill (formerly Visy Paper.) Steve attended Miles Community College in Miles City, Montana. His responsibility includes various types of training and incident analysis for HCP and is a member of the North Central Indiana Safety Counsel. Steve resides in Hartford City Indiana, enjoys golfing and fishing. He has 4 children and 8 grandchildren.
Matthew Kanneberg Matt is currently the Director of Medical, Ergonomics & Home office Health & Safety for WestRock. Matt has had a 30+ year career within the pulp & paper industry. In addition, he has worked in safety positions within construction, public and private sectors and in his early career was an active Emergency Medical Technician and Fire/Rescue Technician. He has held board positions as Disaster Chairman for a chapter of the American Red Cross and Chairman of the Franklin Center for the Arts. He is a current board member for PPSA organization and was the Board Chairman in 2015, 16. Matt has received numerous awards to include a letter of appreciation from former Governor Sonny Perdue of Georgia & the Governor’s Office of Highway Safety and RockTenn’s 2013 Culture Award. Matt resides in Rincon, GA with his wife Karin and son Evan.
Pete Masias, CSP Peter is currently the Corporate Director of Safety and Risk Management for Green Bay Packaging Inc. Peter has over 23 years of experience working in Safety, Risk Management and Worker’s Compensation. He is a Certified Safety Professional and has a BS Degree from NIU and ISU in Occupational Safety and Health. Peter is a member of many safety organizations including ASSE, AIHA and PPSA.
Shawn Powell has been in the Industrial business for 22 years. His knowledge is cross-categorical; and he has had the opportunity to participate in the successes (and failures) of world class operations in both compliance and productivity initiatives. By currently leading the Strategic Accounts team at Brady Corporation, he has intimate insight into the latest challenges and solutions companies are encountering daily on a global level. Powell has worked with multiple divisions of the company and learned from varying styles of top management; these experiences have provided him with valuable insight and a historical perspective that could only be attained with exposure. Powell has developed an impressive record of achievement in sales management, visionary leadership, innovative business solutions, product development, and end user development. The skills he has developed, combined with his motivational “lead by example” management approach, have always allowed him to create dynamic and successful teams. Powell grew up in Columbia, SC and graduated from the University of South Carolina. He spend 15 years in Los Angeles and made Daniel Island, South Carolina his home seven years ago. He is a current member of the Recreation Commission for the City of Charleston. He enjoys golf, coaching, the beach and time spent with his wife, his son Cole (8th grade) and daughter Grace (6th grade). Bob Ross Bob is a 31-year veteran of the Pulp and Paper Industry. His current job title is Safety Director Paper Mills with Packaging Corporation of America, a position he has held for over 4 years. Prior to joining PCA, he was the Director of Safety and Health for Temple-Inland Corporation, until their acquisition by International Paper. During that period, he served on the PPSA Board as an Ad-hoc member. Other companies in which Bob has had management roles include NewPage, Glatfelter, MeadWestvaco, Georgia Pacific and Champion International. Bob has a Bachelor of Science Degree from East Central Oklahoma State University. In his spare time, he likes to hunt, fish, and travel. He has been married to his wife, Carol, for 40 years and has two children and two grandchildren.
Ronnie Stamey As a Safety and Health Professional and partner in C&R Compliance LLC, Ronnie has 25 years’ experience in the Safety, Health and Environmental field. Ronnie started his career as a fire fighter with the City of Rome GA Fire Department, before moving to the private sector with Unilever HPC NA in 1996. Ronnie has held positions from Plant level EH&S Specialist to Corporate Director of EH&S. Ronnie holds the following certifications within the Safety, Health and Environmental Fields. C&R Compliance, LLC was formed by Ronnie and Clint in 2006. Since 2006 C&R has grown from 2 employees to a field staff of 30 full-time Safety Professionals.
Larry Warren is a native of western North Carolina. He is a graduate of North Carolina State University with BS in Chemical Engineering and BS in Pulp and Paper Science and Technology. He began his career in the paper industry in 1985 at the International Paper mill in Georgetown, SC. During his tenure there, he served as a Process Engineer, Tour Foreman, Paper Technical Group Leader, and Paper Machine Superintendent. In 1991, he joined Willamette Industries as the Development Engineer for the Fine Paper group and was subsequently promoted to Technical Services Manager for the Fine Paper group. In 1996, he became the Plant Manager at Willamette’s Owensboro, Kentucky converting operation. In 2007, with the creation of Domtar as a result of Weyerhaeuser’s acquisition of Willamette and subsequent sale, he was promoted to Director of Converting and relocated to Fort Mill, SC. In February of 2015, he assumed the role of Senior Director of Health and Safety, Pulp and Paper/Corporate.
Eric is a Global H&S Program Manager for International Paper. Based at IP’s Headquarters in Memphis, TN, he is responsible for the development and deployment of health and safety programs globally, as well as enterprise-wide regulatory capital management. He has over 30 years of experience in EHS management across a variety of industries including pulp and paper, food and beverage, metal fabrication, pharmaceuticals, and paint and coatings. Eric is credentialed as a Certified Industrial Hygienist, Certified Safety Professional, and Certified Hazardous Materials Manager, and holds a BS in Chemistry from the University of Tennessee. He resides in Collierville, TN, with his wife and three children.
